Robespierre’s Justification for State Terror

Robespierre’s Justification for State Terror Maximilien Robespierre states, â€Å"What is the goal toward which we are heading? The peaceful enjoyment of liberty and equality. † (Bienvenu, p. 1, para. 1) The laws that have been passed by the royalty that are meant to bring long lasting righteousness, are laws that are recognized; these laws are not written any where but in the essence of all individuals. Robespierre was elected as the representative of the National Convention and joined a political club called the radical Jacobin party.Being apart of the Convention and the Jacobins, Robespierre took over the administrative power of the Republic. Because the Jacobins believed that France was in need of change and restructuring, and Robespierre was now the head of the Convention, he can develop such change. By doing so he argues that in the land, the use of ethics must be replaced with the use of pride, proposition for traditions, self-regard for arrogance, magnificence f or narcissism, prestige for money, and immorality of the sovereign for virtues and the phenomenon. He believed in democracy and the Republic of virtue. He felt that in order to set the basis of democracy within the people, the merge of both ending the war of independence and oppression must take place in order to put an end to the revolt. The essences of the Republic are virtue and equality. He explains how it is the development of virtue and the maintenance of equality that creates the Republic. Therefore, it is embraced or founded by an individual. He believed that the quality of being an admired government would be an advantage in gaining the trust of the citizens in order to create a strict and rigorous government, â€Å"†¦be trustful towards the people and severe towards itself. † (Bienvenu, p. 2, para. 2) Robespierre states the strengths and weaknesses of this theory: the strength being the triumph of truth rather than dishonesty, and the rights of the community†™s interests than the private. The purpose of both virtue and terror was that without terror it can be deadly, and if it is deadly, virtue is strong. If one did not hated crime, they were presumed to detest virtue. Social protection is for the passive citizens, and the ones who are violent are the ones who are the ones who to be apart of England and Austria. Towards the end, Robespierre mentions an idea of Aristocracy, in which he creates secret illicit laws instead of vigorously supporting his own country. He ends by saying that a cruel government can kill, being free is not for everyone, and if anyone disagreed with his ideas, they would be considered an enemy or traitor.Robespierre structures his argument by introducing the points he wants to make step by step. He starts off by informing the audience of what he thinks the land should contain, and how it should run. He gives examples of ideas, and substitutes them with what he thinks it should be instead. For instance, he would s ay, â€Å"good people in place of good society,† meaning he would replace a good society, and choose to have good citizens instead. (Bienvenu, p. 1, para. 2) Robespierre defines democracy in his own way, then goes on to describe how â€Å"the soul of the Republic is virtue [and] equality† (Bienvenu, p. , para. 6) is in his eyes. He mentions social protection, which is only for citizens who are passive. As this speech ends, Robespierre uses questions to bring the audience to a realization of the point[s] he was trying to bring out throughout the speech. He uses Aristocracy to back up his ideas. Towards the end, he leaves the audience with a riddle they must figure out in order to understand what he meant. Maximilien Robespierre violates all 17 articles of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789.He did not give the citizens to participate in the making of the law or the government. They were not given the freedom to speak, write or print, and not everyone had equal rights. The ones that followed his ideas received special treatment, whereas, the ones who disagreed, were considered conspirators. They were sometimes imprisoned and other times killed. He did the opposite of of Article 5, and acts in a way that it hurt society. He killed 40,000 people and locked up 3,000. He did not allow society to use of public agents when required.Laws were created even though the people, and society did not agree. This is why, in 1794, Robespierre was sentence to death with the use of the guillotine, something he like to use for his executions. During the French Revolution, no one has caused as much dilemma as Maximilien Robespierre did. He believed in equality and virtue, however, he contradicted himself and was not aware that he was, in fact, biased. If he thought, heard or was even told that someone descended, they would have fell into the category of an enemy or traitor. He is represents the later Adolf Hitler, who was a dictator, in seve ral different ways. Two being that he tried to promote his beliefs to the people of his land, by infusing fear into the people of the land, and killing or injuring who ever would disagree with him. However, he did not discriminate as viciously as Hitler did. If Robespierre was to do what he did in the present society, he may have been sentenced to life in prison or capital punishment for attempting to corrupt the minds of others, and for killing as many people as he did.

Discussion topic

I really appreciate the way you listed the steps in selecting random samples. I did not come across any steps or rules to obtain a simple random sample. The lottery Is a form of simple sampling. It does not use any method to select numbers other than the population number set. Consecutive numbers can be drawn or number far apart from each other. I would like to know more about the difference between the type of random sampling used in lottery draws versus the sampling method steps you scribed. The only type of selection process in the text book definition states simple random sampling uses selection of elements from the selection frame (Burns, 2011). References Burns, N.. Grove, S. K. , & Gray. J. (2011). Understanding nursing research: Building an evidence-based practice. Maryland Heights, MO: Elsevier/Saunders. Your post brings up the very important fact that the sample size need to be large enough to represent the target population (Ramsey, 2011).Target population size eyeing too s mall is a common problem with random sampling as you have described with Autism ratios. If there were more states Involved with the CDC Autism survey, the results may differ. The question or research being done may not need a large population as well. Random sampling need to have a large enough size, must represent the target population and must truly be random (Ramsey, 2011 Ramsey, D. J. (2011). Statistics for dummies. Hoboken, N. J: Wiley.Cluster sampling Is a productive way to obtain random sampling of a very large population. National restaurant chains test new menu items In this way. When I lived in Ohio, it was a big test market area. Supposedly the population of Ohio was thought to be representative of Midwestern people. Area restaurants such as McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Domino's introduced new menu items in this area to survey their popularity. I do not know what type of demographic data was used to determine that Ohio residents were representative of the Midwestern populat ion.It was nice to get to try the new menu Items before the rest of the country. The first McDonald's salads and Domino's try at breakfast pizzas were yummy. The Taco Bell French fries didn't make it. This was a good example of being part of a large cluster sampling process without ever knowing it. I think you covered all the different types of sampling very thoroughly. I am not sure the term census Is a type of random sampling. Census Is usually a method of attempting to collect date from an entire population (Ramsey, 2011).

Virgin Usa – Pricing Strategy

Marketing [pic] Virgin USA Francesco Marani Problem Statement Virgin mobile is entering the US mobile market. Low brand recognition in USA and limited financial resources for advertisement represents a constraint because to enter successfully in such a market Virgin needs to swiftly attract its potential target customer, in order to establish a critical mass and financial strength to defend itself from incumbent and/or other potential entrants (price-wars, dumping, etc†¦). The profile of target customers, youth in between 15 and 29 years old with low credit credentials and high income / price elasticity (sensitivity to changes in price and income), is in conflict with the need to retain customers for a minimum period of 17 months as currently in the market ($ 370 / [52-30] = 17), in order to breakeven recovering the Cost per Acquisition (CPA). Situation Analysis Competition – the Mobile Industry in USA: there are 6 national carriers, as well as other small regional providers. The market is overcrowded, mature, highly competitive and concentrated (3 largest carriers covering about 59% of the market – Exhibit 1); requiring large capital expenditure (CAPEX). High churn rate contribute to create uncertainty on the profitability of clients particularly because the carriers are perceived as utility providers rather than service providers. Advertisement expenditure by market leaders is high in order to capture unsatisfied customers. Customer – Market: Most of the new subscribers of mobile services (117 Mln in 2001) opt for a contractual agreement with mobile carriers, which implies hat the bulk of customers are locked into an agreement and potentially dissatisfied. Carriers make money with hidden fees, taxes and unexpected charge (calls during peak time and in excess of monthly allowance). Customer confusion, dissatisfaction and homogenous offer could be some of the reason behind the significant churn rate. We can assume that a significant chunk of the remaining subscribers (13 Mln) are mainly concentrated within the younger part of the population, in many instance unable to sign up for a contract given their lower credit credentials. Virgin aims at attracting 1 Mln of subscriber on the first year and is partnering with MTV, specialized magazines and selected trendy stores consistently with its target customers. Company – Virgin Value Preposition: The Virgin brand in other European market is associated to value for money, innovation, a hip and trendy image, and also ability to shake industry convention and status-quo. Virgin is planning to enter the USA market aggressively, where it has almost no brand recognition, focusing on understanding and meeting customer needs rather than operating the physical infrastructure (MVNO approach). By trying to differentiate its offer and value preposition from the flat and boring offer of established carrier Virgin is trying to change the concept and the perception of such service. Final goal would be reducing dissatisfaction and hence the churn rate, potentially increase the average spending per customers by in other entertainment services. Context: Virgin target customers are the youth between 15 and 29 years old, with less stable economic and consumer behavior, but a higher attitude to spend. On a comparative basis, penetration rate is expected to growth the most on Virgin’s target customer. Additionally revenues generated by entertainment services are expected to grow exponentially (annual growth above 100%) creating an additional revenue stream. Alternatives Clone the industry Prices: Adopting the same price structure available in the market seems to be a strategy consistent with the need of a simple communication, while differentiation will be based on transparency, attention to customer needs and additional services. Such price replicating strategy can be difficulty defendable in the long term. The owners of the network infrastructure, which in some instances is also a provider of mobile services, could easily cross-subsidize their mobile business and reduce its CPA to compete aggressively with Virgin, neutralizing its strategy given their superior rental network cost advantage. Any price war is likely to create an immediate change in customer preferences, in particular Virgin’s target customer (15- 29 years) is likely to be strongly affected given their traditional high sensitivity to prices change (price elasticity typically high). Price below the Competition: The option to adopt a quasi-similar pricing structure, with an exception for the bucket of consumption in between 100 and 300 minutes, has the same pros and cons of the one before mentioned, in addition to increase the probability of triggering an aggressive competitive reaction by incumbent (price wars). Both the above options fail to address three significant aspects: ? The high churn rate, which is one of the main problems in the service industry, is not addressed by any of the mentioned strategy. The limited advertisement budget may fail to create an impact and convey rapidly a clear message to any potential customers. ? The post-paid contract may be difficult to implement using the planned distribution channel. Lower sales commission could also implies less prepared sales representatives, which may fail to properly complete paperwork related to credit checks. Recommendations Virgin should adopt a brand new approach entering the mobile market to quick ly capture the favor of unhappy customers, as well as people unable to sign a contract given their low credit credentials. No contracts (pre-paid only), no hidden fees & taxes, an aggressive price strategy within the 100 – 300 minutes of consumption as a monthly allowance, with no difference between peak and off-peak charges. The average cost per minute in the industry is at the moment around 12 cents ($ 52 average bill per month / 417 min). By analyzing different possible scenario, including different retention rates and rebates in line with the market (Exhibit 2), Virgin can produce a positive Lifetime Value (LTV) offering a tiered price structure, by charging 0. 19cents for monthly usage below 100 minutes, 0. cents in between 100 and 200 minutes, or 0. 06cents between 200 and 300. This solution has been obtained by resolving the LTV formula, leaving the price as an incognita, and assuming a 6% churn rate, a rebate from client of the mobile cost at $30 (using similar proportion of rebate as other competitors), ? PROs: difficult to be replicated by competitors in the market in the short term. It best suits the need of youth people unable to pass credit checks, as well as teenagers and parents needs because it naturally limit their maximum spending in advance. LTV positive since the beginning and CPA at $160 (refer to the next section for further consideration on the CPA). Virgin can further reduce the cost per minute charges if we increase the upfront cost billed to customer for the phone (Exhibit 3), in case competitors start competing aggressively. ? CONs: pre-paid are typically associated with higher churn rate, which can result in a net loss for the carriers before having recovered the CPA. Pre-paid customer in some instances use the mobile phone less than traditional users. An appropriate (easy to reach and cheap) infrastructure needs to be in place to recharge the phone. Implementation Plan Price: an aggressive tiered price strategy, with price decreasing at increased consumption simple to communicate and sensitively lower than competitors (Exhibit 4). Any minutes in excess of 300 minutes can be charged at the same cost per minute applied for the 200 – 300 minutes of monthly consumption. No difference between peak and off-peak charges. Contract: no contract, no hidden fees and taxes. Every user will be charged only an upfront cost for the phone, which in an aggressive scenario is set at $30, (i. e. half of the minimum amount currently charged by other carriers – Exhibit 5). Communication: Virgin is entering the USA mobile market using selected affiliated partner (MTV, selected magazine, etc) consistent with its target customers. The planned advertisement investment is $60 Mln, lower than competitors, but significant for a new entrant. If we consider such t investment as a cost, the total CPA is around $160 (Exhibit 2). Nevertheless, from a financial perspective we should consider the $60 million initial investment as the only CAPEX required, which need to be remunerated by taking into account the company and market risk. If we assume a 16% rate of return on the CAPEX we would reduce the CPA at 109. 6 (Exhibit 6), close to the condition to make the present plan viable according to Morgan Stanley research. Success implementation of the strategy require Virgin entering and impacting its target customer swiftly, in order to build a critical mass and financial strength before being able to face any price-wars. Breakeven: currently the industry break-even is 17months. If we assume average consumption around 417 minutes per month, we can see that the breakeven will be significantly lower, and around 5 month. In the present calculation we have neither considered any extra revenues generated by VirginXtras, nor a reduction in the churn rate as a likely consequence of the improved customer satisfaction. Redu cing the churn rate is probably one of the most important objectives in the mobile industry sectors, also because gives additional space for price reduction as demonstrated (Exhibit 2, 3, 6). Exhibit 1 [pic] Exhibit 2 [pic] * Assuming 1 Mln of customers. $60 Mln /1 Mln customers = $ 60 per customer Exhibit 3 Intermediate Rebate [pic] Maximum Rebate [pic] * Assuming 1 Mln of customers. $60 Mln /1 Mln customers = $ 60 per customer Exhibit 4 Price Advantage against Market Average Prices [pic] *Mkt Adv = Market price per minute – Virgin price per minute. Exhibit 5 [pic] Exhibit 6 [pic] * Considering the investment on advertisement as a capital expenditure, with a 16% annual rate of return. ($60 Mln /1 Mln customer x 0. 16 = $ 9. 6

Organizational behavior in International Business Machine (IBM) Case Study

Organizational behavior in International Business Machine (IBM) - Case Study Example The organizational behavior provides a guideline or the mainframe through which organizations achieve their goals by the implementation of the policies. The absence of proper organizational behavior policies in an organization does no good to the overall success of it in the market. The overall process of organization behavior deals with the thoughts, feelings and emotions which arise among the employees in the workplace. ... In matters of organizational behavior, motivation is a key factor for directing the employees to attain the goals of the organization. With the help of motivation, an employee raises their level of efficiency and performs better. The increased level of motivation provided by the employers also helps in the development of loyalty among the employees. The overall image of the organization also improves if the employees are motivated in a proper fashion. The range of factors which motivates the employees all depends upon the need of the individuals and without the needs the employees or the individuals will not be motivated considerably (Dewhurst, et al, 2009). According to Maslow, the needs of the individuals follow a hierarchy and he segregated the five levels of needs based on their importance. The five levels of needs addressed by him are based on physiological context, the security of an individual, needs based on esteem and self actualizations. The physiological needs of the indiv idual constitute the basic elements which are required by the individual for survival like food, water. From the view point of the organization, physiological needs constitute the adequate salary and working environment, so that the employees can sustain in the organization for a long period of time. The security and the safety needs of the individual involves requirement of a place for living where they can be protected from various environmental hazards and human threats. Security needs in an organization deals with providing the employees a secured career where they can meet their professional goals. The social needs of an individual according to Maslow, relates to the social aspects of human life. It includes needs for the individual to be recognized in the

Why are there so many different theories of international politics Essay

Why are there so many different theories of international politics - Essay Example Nevertheless, no one theory can adequately capture all the aspects of these complex relations. It is, therefore, only fair that different theories be used to explicate international politics (Prithi, 2005). This way, one theory adds on to the ideas of another, while at the same time criticizing the other theory. This competition helps us to see the weaknesses and strengths of each theory and its applicability to international politics. In this essay, we take a look at different theories of international politics and applicability to the complexities of world politics. Proponents of the realism theory of international politics hold that states are always struggling to gain power over other states. The sole and most important purpose of a state is to amass as much power as possible, decreasing the power of their enemies in the process. Such states place their self interests above those of other states, thereby creating supremacy battles, with each state endeavoring to be the most prominent (Walt, 2000). This competition often leads to conflicts over which state is superior to the other. However, even among realists, there are differences in thoughts and opinions. For example, classical realists believe that that states are like human beings and that they have an innate need to control other states. This uncontrollable desire for domination often leads to conflicts and wars among the involved states. On the other hand, the neorealist theory which is more modern holds that the international system is to blame for states wanting to control others. Proponents of this new theory argue that each state seeks the best ways to survive in global politics. If the survival of the state depends on its domination of another, then the former is forced to do exactly that. Since there are no international rules that refrain rivalries between states, it becomes easy for states to attack each other for the sake of power. A powerful state is a

Major civil strife Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Major civil strife - Research Paper Example This civil strife began in 1993 following tension that had been building between the two tribes. Report indicates that the Hutus who were the minority in the country used to oppress the majority Tutsis something, which did not go well with the Tutsis, forcing them to resort to valance in order for their voice to be hard and gain respect. The war lasted in 2005 leaving more than 300,000 people dead2. Lack of democracy has also been another factor that has contributed to the high number of ethnic-related civil strife in different parts of the world3. For instance, the Kenya’s post election valance of 2007/2008 was arguably caused because of lack of democracy as the majority Kikuyu tribe was accused by other tribes of having stolen the election in order to remain in power, thereby resulting in ethnic violence that saw more than 1,300 people death plus millions worth of properties destroyed. Despite some isolated cases still being reported in different parts of the world, such civil strife has declined significantly. There is several reason that explains why this is so. First, world has undergone through high level of the democratization process in which people nowadays feel secure with their neighbors4. The democratization processes have helped bring people from different ethnic groups together thereby easing any tension and subspecies among different tribes in a given country something, which was lacking in the past5. A good example can be seen in Rwanda and Burundi in which the democratization processes witnessed since the end of the civil strife in 2005 has helped bring together the protagonists Hutus and Tutsis together for a common goal, which is the development6. Secondly, several countries around the world have undergone through constitutional arrangements, which have helped bring people from different ethnic communities

Hemophilia A Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Hemophilia A - Essay Example Some emergency cases require urgent medical attention to prevent death. This paper will discuss in detail the causes of the disease, its prevalence, symptoms and diagnosis as well as management and treatment of the disease. Introduction Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder that is hereditary where the blood clotting process takes place in an abnormal way and it is very rare. People affected by hemophilia may bleed for a longer period especially after an accident. Individuals suffering from this disorder may bleed internally especially in joints such as elbows, ankles and the knees. Almost 9 persons out of 10 suffer from Hemophilia A, which is a rare condition and the main type of hemophilia, where the blood clotting process occurs abnormally (Schoenstadt, 1). Factor VIII is essential in the blood clotting process. Hemophilia A may occur due to insufficient factor VIII. If the levels of factor VIII are 6 % to 50% below the normal percentage, bleeding may occur primarily. However, with le vels below 1 percent, impulsive bleeding can occur. Most bleeding occurs into the joints of the arms and legs, causing crippling joint damage. In addition, atrophy occurs due to frequent bleeding into the muscles (Lockwood, 1). Lack of factor VIII may leads to various problems. Because bleeders will not close, there is a higher possibility of bleeding out (Hemophilia.com, 1). Causes and Prevalence of Hemophilia A Defect in one of the genes that determine how the body conducts various blood-clotting factors may result to hemophilia A. This gene, known as F8 is present in the X chromosome. One type of the blood-clotting factor is factor 8, which, normally made by the F8 gene. Mutation of the F8 gene hinders clots from forming in case of an accident, which may lead to too much bleeding and in mot cases it may be difficult to control (Schoenstadt, 2). Women have two X chromosomes. In cases where a factor 8 gene does not function, the gene on the other chromosome can perform the task gen erating enough factors 8. On the other hand, males have only one X-chromosome. If the factor VIII gene on that chromosome is imperfect, they will end up having hemophilia A. Therefore, most people suffering from hemophilia A are males (1). A woman who has imperfect factor 8 gene becomes a carrier. This means that her children may inherit the imperfect gene. In a woman who has the defective gene, any of her male children will have a 50% possibility of having hemophilia A, while any of her female children will have a 50% probability of being carriers (Dugdale et al, 2). In the United States, about 18,000 individuals suffer from hemophilia A and almost 400 babies each year inherit this disorder from their mothers. Even though hemophilia occurs in males only, there is a lower probability that this disorder may affect women. Almost nine individuals out of 10 affected with hemophilia suffer from type A disorder. The people suffering from hemophilia A have a problem with clotting factors. These clotting factors aids in the blood-clotting process, thus their absence leads to hemophilia A (Schoenstadt, 1). Prevalence of hemophilia A varies among different nations. For instance, in the early 1970s, the reported hemophilia A occurrence for the United Kingdom was about 10 per 100 000 males compared to the occurrence
